Smartphones

Smartphones
What’s the craze all about?

If you haven’t heard of smartphones, we’d like to learn where you’ve been hiding all this time. Smartphones have been all over the news and chances are, you do know what they are – only you know them under a different name. Smartphones are mobile phones with computer like capabilities.

What’s that? Aha! Yes, you’ve not only heard of them, you’ve probably seen them as well. Packed with Internet access, email capabilities, address books, and a whole lot more, cell phones have come a long way since their first debut. But be careful not to confuse these newest toys with sandbox devices.

Sandbox devices are tools that come pre-loaded with things like calendars, calculators, and a notepad. What differentiates them from smartphones is that users can add (download and install) additional programs to smartphones and they seemingly become mini portable computers for the people who use them. That – and the ability to edit the content that sits on them – is what makes these phones “smart.”

Some of the more popular brand names include the Blackberry, PalmSource, Nokia, and Windows CE. Yet the craze is extending to even some off-brand company names. Today, it’s hard to find a cell phone that doesn’t offer some sort of “smart” technology because it’s in such a high demand. The convenience of having information at our immediate access is phenomenal – so much so that thousands of programmers have jumped on the opportunity to build unique applications specific to these small machines.

As a result, you can find tons of games, databases, GPA systems, weather reporting programs, and even small encyclopedias on these things – each accessible not at the click of a mouse – but at a few presses of a free thumb. Of course a mini keyboard is available for the text-messaging fan or for the poor fellow who can’t seem to get away from the office. In the latter case, don’t be surprised if you find the entire Microsoft Office suite displayed within a screen no bigger than a matchbook.

Is this a phase? That’s highly doubtful. The market for these devices extends from the highly technical and professional all the way to the pre-teen socialite. The product crosses all demographics and thanks to decreasing costs – it sees no economic boundaries as well. The Wikipedia encyclopedia claims that “Out of 1 billion camera phones to be shipped in 2008, Smartphones, the higher end of the market with full email support, will represent about 10% of the market or about 100 million units.”

But what is it that makes smartphones so appealing? As mentioned, smartphones give us the ability to not only carry our data around with us where ever we go, it also gives us the ability to edit that data any place – any time. In today’s “reality” based generation, we’re always looking for the opportunity to capture and relive a moment. And we want to share that moment with others. At best, smart phones give us the opportunity to express ourselves impromptu with entertaining results.

Attempting to do the same with a bulky desktop computer or laptop is to cumbersome. Even some of the smallest peripherals (digicams, digital cameras, etc.) don’t give us the same opportunities that smart phones do. Being able to carry around a device for communication, creation, recording, and editing simply compliments the need for today’s generation to do more and then do it, faster!

Learn how the modern cell phone got to what it is now by comparing it with its past versions. Be able to choose wisely from the current popular mobile phones by knowing the multitude of features these phones have.

Communication has quickly evolved over the years. The telephone reached great heights but there was one thing that was holding it back. This was because of being connected to a phone line at all times, making it impossible to bring around wherever you may go. Thus the invention of the mobile phone, otherwise termed as cellular phone or cell phone for short.

Mobile phones definitely made a splash upon their release to the public. No longer were people unable to leave their home phones in order to get calls from others. They would bring their mobile phones anywhere with a signal coverage to make and receive urgent phone calls or even just have a chat. Having a mobile phone is a luxury. After all, people enjoy chatting. Earlier versions of mobile phones enabled the user to call another mobile phone user anytime and anywhere. It was that convenient.

Soon, newer mobile phones were developed to further enhance communication. These cell phones had Short Messaging Service, or SMS, which allowed cell phone users to compose written texts and send them to others, who in turn can read these messages on their cell phone screen. This revolutionized a whole new communication trend.

The parts of communication involve a sender, a message, and a receiver. Modern phones with text messaging capabilities accurately abide by this principle. The only factor different with traditional communication to text messaging is that traditional conversations integrate feelings with their messages. Whenever a person speaks, his/her voice, tone, and pitch can be methods to express his/her feelings. With text messaging, the message is purely bland, although later on people developed styles of creating emoticons, which are basically a group of letters, numbers, or symbols illustrating faces expressing different emotions.

Mobile phones shortly developed Multimedia Messaging Service or MMS which allows the sending and receiving of pictures, videos, and music files. Soon, a multitude of other features were added as well, including GPRS, WAP, and EDGE, which were basically used to access the internet through the mobile phone.

With the addition of cameras, integrated MP3 players, and wireless connectivity such as infrared and Bluetooth technology, mobile phones were slowly turning into versatile multimedia devices. They rival even the functionality of the digital camera, and MP3 player. No wonder sales of these devices faltered while the sales of cell phones increased dramatically.

Cell phones are evolving faster every time. The current selection of mobile phones mostly incorporates 3G technology and wireless internet access. Other than the usual text messaging and voice calls, you now have the ability to view the person you are talking to with this 3G technology. Talk about a huge leap in the field of communication!

If you plan on buying a popular cell phone, take time to learn the variety of selections first. There are basically three types of cell phones in the market today. The first is the basic budget handset. It has all the basic functions you can expect from a mobile phone, minus the flashy gadgets and functions. They are basically plain and simple text and call mobile phones. The second is the multimedia phone. It still has the basic text and call feature, along with hardware peripherals such as cameras, wireless connectivity and more powerful speakers for music. Some also have built in radio as an added feature. The third type of cell phone is the smart phone. It is usually aimed for those business people on the go. The features include a full QWERTY keypad, named after the first sequence of letters in the computer keyboard. The smart phone has all the advanced features considering its very expensive cost. These features include wireless internet connection and browsing, email, and various applications that enable the user to view documents that can only be normally viewed using a computer.

With this selection in mind, you may want to reflect on what cell phone category you want to choose. First, consider your budget. Do you have the adequate finances to buy a brand new popular cell phone? Then, you should think about how you will use the cell phone. Do you find yourself actually needing those extra features in your everyday life? Do you actually need wireless internet connection on the go if you are already retired for instance? But dont think poorly of this functionality. For example, if you are a typical student, you can use your cell phone for convenient web browsing. This would save you a lot of time. Therefore, it is wise to think it over before buying.

Part of what drives you to buy these popular cell phones would probably be due to the appeal of these gadgets to the general public. They are definitely eye candy. These gadgets are currently one of the luxurious items that everyone craves. Mobile phones are now established as status symbols in society. The newer the cell phone, the more popular you become. The more expensive the cell phone, the richer they regard you.

There is no great mobile phone. It is the perspective of the buyer that makes it so. There are so many phones that cater to different people with different statuses. Whats great for one group of people may not be great for another. Choose whatever phone you feel right for you.

Today, there are more people owning cell phones than people having regular phone lines at home. This speaks well to the mobile phone market. It is expected that mobile phones will still be a popular luxury for a long time.

Text Messaging: A Necessary Tool For Business And Personal Use

Text messaging, also identified as Short Messaging Service (SMS), is rising up as a trendy form of digital writing. It is rapidly becoming the favorite over e-mail in sending private messages from a computer or cellular phone. Teens along with the hearing impaired have embraced this electronic form of keeping in touch. Even schools are utilizing text messaging as an alternate form of emergency contact.

Rapidly Advancing in the Messaging World

Originally directed at businesses as an additional feature, Short Messaging Service (SMS) has advanced in the United States as an inexpensive plan for long distance or local communication for everyone. SMS is characterized as text messages, giving up to 160 characters in a message to be sent to or from mobile phones. This form of messaging has become a convenient alternative to voice messaging and e-mail because it is private and it means less usage of airtime minutes. Likewise, consumers and businesses utilize text messaging for their personal or professional communication needs. Teenage cellular users have picked up on the texting fad also.

Teens and Text Messaging

What is the ordinary teens preferred writing tool? Well, it sure isnt a pen or a #2 pencil. Believe it or not, its not a computer either. Their favorite composition tool is a cellular phone. Though mass amounts of adults complain about e-mail, instant messaging, and the text messages that sent juvenile fingers dancing over their cell phone keys, numerous experts take a firm stand that teenage authorship is as robust as ever. This proliferation of composition, in all its vexed, hurried contours, has in reality produced a generation more skilled with the scripted word.

American teenagers have been the leaders in worldwide trend setting; and actually were trailing behind when it came to the text-messaging trend. This has been fashionable in Asia and Europe for a few years. Text messaging has presently become a favored form in which American teenagers pass notes to each other. It will thrive, as todays text-grasping teens grow older. The next generation of teens will proceed to use text messaging because it is inexpensive, quick and a discrete way to communicate. Teenagers and adults alike can opt to receive text traffic updates, updates for local weather conditions, breaking news of a favorite pop artist or daily horoscopes. Some sports teams have even begun using SMS to keep in touch with fans.

While attending entertainment events such as an amusement park or concert, you could program your cellular service to alert you when anyone on your buddy list enters your area. Or maybe use the same service to locate your roaming teens in a shopping mall. The service, which is location-based, could alert you when your teen has come within close proximity. In return you would be able to text your teen and arrange a meeting place. Dissimilar from e-mail, a single text message may cost the transmitter as much as 10 cents per message, and receiving the message may likewise cost the recipient a few pennies. Therefore, heavy spamming is not as likely as it is through e-mail. As a result, businesses find it less of a hindrance than e-mail; therefore they have utilized texting for employee reminders of upcoming meetings or audits.

Texting for Businesses

Not very often will you find a business owner perched at his/her desk. They have much to oversee which keeps them busy, allotting little to no time for siphoning through e-mail that is at most times rubbish. With text messaging, employers are able to inform members of their staff of rush orders, emergency meetings just planned or a surprise audit entering the building. A majority of cellular users have their cell phones with them wherever they go. If an employee is not at their desk, a text message is more accessible than e-mail. Text messaging is also a great tool for business owners who employ the hearing impaired and its an efficient method for communication with hearing impaired employees.

Text Messaging Assists the Hearing Impaired

The deaf or hearing impaired has embraced this engineering science rather advantageously. When there is interconnectivity of cellular phone reticulations, users transmit with their phones and are able to reach anyone who has a mobile phone. Text based cellular messaging has staggeringly benefited the hearing or speech impaired. By utilizing text messaging, such people can order take out, invite over company, do research and send or receive messages on their own. Text messaging has been very popular among hearing or speech impaired ensuring that their group of friends extends beyond and does not confine them exclusively to their shared community.

Schools Can Benefit

Text messaging has brought a few benefits to schools as well. Past studies have demonstrated that up to 40% of a school’s phone bill consists of calls to locate absentee students and calls to ascertain substitute teachers at short notice. With many parents off to work, text messaging is a sure way to communicate without the possibility of erased answering machine messages or intercepted calls. The payback on this investment could be a significant growth in student attendance and their parents involvement with the school itself.

Choosing the Right Plan

Virtually, all cellular phone carriers offer a text-messaging plan. Many cell phone carriers offer a potpourri of plans to oblige an individuals or businesses needs. The text messaging plans usually offered by cellular providers can be similar in plans yet differ in cost per message. Text messaging can be included with a particular plan or a consumer can be charged a monthly fee allowing a certain number of text messages without an additional fee.

Text messages are dispatched in a variety of modes; depending on which mobile provider you choose to go with. Cellular phone providers envision you as the cornerstone of their business. It’s a serious benefit for you to acknowledge this before you shop for a cellular phone plan. Cellular service providers require your business to help advance their business, so they will try to romance you with their finest service plans. Choosing a desirable cellular service provider with the most advantageous text-messaging plan may necessitate more than checking out one or two diverse providers and comparing their service plans to your text messaging needs. You may have to check into your own usage as well. For example, how many text messages do you send in a month? While a provider may offer a low rate per message, you may find it less costly to go with a monthly plan or go with a text-messaging plan that is already included with another plan.

For whatever the purpose, text messaging is taking off at high speeds in the communications field. The hearing impaired, parents, teens and businesses alike have all benefited from this electronic form of conversing. It has been a necessary tool in many consumers lives. Text messaging is an inexpensive, timesaving way to keep in touch.
